This spring, Acqua di Parma launched the limited edition fragrance, Bergamotto di Calabria. Created from a treasured artisanal technique for extracting bergamot, the fragrance is rich, luminous and full of vitality and is one of my favourite citrus fragrances for the coming months.
The new fragrance of Bergamotto di Calabria La Spugnatura by Acqua di Parma revolves around artisanship, the human touch and the fullness of nature. A limited edition born from using a unique essential oil extracted using a time-honoured artisan technique.
The Old Sponging Technique
Part of the reason why this fragrance is so special is because it is a project long-nurtured by Acqua di Parma who as a Maison, have always loved to preserve the oldest and most valuable artisanal processes of Italy. The origin of this new fragrance is deeply rooted to the bergamot fields of Calabria, where very few artisans in the world still practise the old sponging technique. A fascinating traditional process, which results in the complete manual extraction of the bergamot essence.
Two artisans manage to go through between 75 to 100kg of fruit in an hour and at least 200kg are required to obtain one kilogram of essential oil. The sponge used in the process preserves all the facets of the fruit and it is this unique extract which distinguishes the Bergamotto di Calabria La Spugnatura from other bergamot fragances.
Bergamotto di Calabria
I absolutely love the fragrance which is perfectly unisex. It is packaged in a special porcelain bottle which is also created using a timeless manufacturing process. From the onset, you are immersed in the fragrance and it seems as though you are in a field of bergamots. There are mandarin and orange notes which bring succulent fruity accents along with sour notes of grapefruit. The citrus notes of the fragrance are complemented by green tones of ferula and floral notes of geranium which highlight its natural sweetness.
This is a rich fragrance, bright and full of vivacity which glorifies the bergamot in all its facets. Not usually a big fan of citrus fragrances, I absolutely love Acqua di Parma's Bergamotto di Calabria and highly recommend it for your summer fragrance collection. A simple spritz of this transports you to summer holidays and the luscious Calabrian landscape.
